I have a 15 year old son with sever autism. He goes through episodes where he gets aggressive and destructive. He pulls my hands to apply pressure to his head then hits you the pulls my hands back. It will last up to15 to 30 minutes. When he pulls out of it he cries. He is non verbal so we have no idea what he is feeling.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. It is common to see violent aggressive behaviour in autism patients. He is 15 years old and is probably having hormonal changes also which also increase aggressive behaviour in such children. A lot of children with autism have mental retardation which also increase the risk of violent behaviour. As his behaviour is persistent so please take him to his psychiatrist and discuss about treatment.

For violent behaviour in autistic patients medicines like mood stabilisers as Sodium Valproate can help. The medicine will help to reduce his anger outbursts and he will become calm. Low dose antipsychotics like Risperidone, Olanzapine also help a lot in such symptoms. Please call his psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.

Try to engage him in some home based or play based activities and this will help to diffuse his anger and aggressive behaviour.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care.
