Suggest Treatments For Deafness And Dumbness In A Seven Year Old.

Hi Doc., I ve got a 7years old daughter born with deafness and dumbness. She was also given birth to prematurely, 7months 2weeks precisely. The Mum was diagnosed of HIV, though, we were discordant couple, passed on 5days after the baby s delivery. My daughter had not been able to speak nor talk till date. She s been tested and confirmed negative because some ART was admitted few moments after her birth. I want to see her talk and hear. So many tests had been carried out till date, with no light at the end of the tunnel. What can I do? I would be glad to hear her talk to me.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello,

Being born prematurely is a risk for deafness. A hearing is necessary for speech to develop. The sounds made by an infant are modeled after what she hears her parents say.

There are specialists who believe that both sign language and spoken language should be used when working with a deaf child.

Has she already been evaluated by pediatric audiologists and pediatric ENT and developmental/behavioral pediatricians? Is there a possibility that hearing aids or cochlear implants could be of help?

Have you looked into support and deaf advocacy groups as well as local/state deaf services bureaus? She should have a 504 plan at the school she attends.

These websites might be of assistance:
-http://hands & voices.org
-http://www.wfdeaf.org
-http://www.nidcd.nih.gov (This site is part of the National Institutes of Health in Maryland just outside of Washington, DC. It is well known for medical research, but it also evaluates and treats challenging patients from all around the country and the world. Speak to her care doctor.)

It is not unusual for parents to become depressed in situations like yours. You may wish to consider getting advice from a mental health specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd
