Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 47 year old female, 5ft 3 in and 124 lbs. my blood pressure at the doctor today was 140/74. It is usually 120 -118 / 74. My Dr wasn t concerned saying that is still in the normal range although she acknowledged it is high for me. From what I ve read it falls under high blood pressure. I eat well, don t drink alcohol, don t smoke and moderately exercise ( I injured my lower back 10 months ago so no longer exercise as I used to). My question, how can I lower my bp?
I would agree with your doctor that it is not high. Usually blood pressure in the doctor's office are elevated because people are nervous or moving around. It would help to check your blood pressures at home with your own machine. Checking your pressure once or twice a day at anytime can get you more information.
Lowering blood pressure can be hard to do as some people are predisposed to high blood pressure. Lowering salt intake is important. There are a lot of foods that are especially high in salt like deli meat, processed foods, canned foods, and taco seasoning. Exercising can also lower your blood pressure whether it is weight training or cardio exercises. Increasing exercise to at least 40 min most days of the weak can help greatly. The keys are: measuring your blood pressure more to get more data, limiting salt, and increasing exercise.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong, General & Family Physician
