Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I am alcohol dependant and am on day 5 of my dry out. I started taking campral on day 4. I was drinking app 800 ml of vodka per day. I have been dependant since my teens with the longest period of being dry for 2 years. I have had extensive counselling and practice mindful thinking. I have suffered depression and anxiety since my teens ( I am now 50). I am very concerned about the side affects that are listed for campral. How could it possibly help me stay away from alcohol if it may make me depressed, disinterested, scared etc. I have also been taking campral for 6 years.
* The Campral is Acamprosate used for the person who is getting away from chronic alcohol consumption to reduce craving and other side effects associated with alcohol withdrawal.
* The tablet is prescribed for a limited period of time, till the person is totally accustomed with the condition of life with physics without alcohol drop in the body, which may be few weeks to months.
* As mentioned here, the duration of 6 years intake of the Campral is not normal and hence needs a serious consideration if the consultant is still prescribing the medicine, unless you are not taking it off the counter.
I would like to discuss the tapering dosage schedule guidelines with your doc during the next planned scheduled appointment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
