Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has a hole in his left tonsil. Is there anyway to heal this hole so it doesn t collect debris and bacteria and cause infections? He has systemic mastocytosis so can not use anything with alcohol or other mast cell degranulators in it. He is prone to reoccurring strep throat infections but takes the probiotic BLIS K12 - streptococcus salivarius - to prevent strep infection. (Prior to starting the probiotic he was getting strep about once a month for a year. Extensive immune function testing did not indicate an immune disorder that would prevent him from fighting these off. Since starting the probiotic 7 months ago, he has only had one strep infection.)
Tonsil holes are formed due to the tonsil stones (food, dead cells or bacteria trapped in the holes & get calcified) when infected get inflamed & cause bad breath & discomfort. To avoid it use mouth wash or warm saline gargle after taking snacks or food. This helps to dislodge the tonsil stones. He should maintain good oral hygiene to stop the formation of tonsil holes, infection & inflammation. He should take small amount of food bites & should not keep it compressed in the mouth but swallow if chewing is complete.
If there is discomfort a treating doctor may suggest simple surgical procedure to remove the tonsil stones by laser or sound waves. A dentist can remove tonsil stones by air or water syringe. If needed antibiotics & anti inflammatory medicines are given for relieve. Get your son clinically examined by a dentist & treated at the earliest.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
