Suggest Ways To Manage Hypertension In An Elderly Person
Hi my name is Brenda. I am 55 years old. I recently visited my primary doctor on a follow up appt re: a removal of a lipoma. They took my blood pressure for vitals and my bp was 142/?. Dr. Michaels wanted to retake the bp again, but waited 5 min. to do so. It happened to go up to 144/?. I have never had high bp, in fact it was always low. I m sitting here and I feel my heart beating really fast, so I took my bp and happens to be 177/90. What should I do or not do? Please
You will need to check your blood pressure every few days for 1-2 months. If it goes on to be high, then probably treatment for high blood pressure is needed. Sometimes blood pressure check at the doctor's office can be higher than normal thus it is better if you can check it at home. Meanwhile, try to keep your weight in healthy limits, eat a healthy diet, avoid alcohol and smoking.
If it continues to be higher than 140/90 then you will have some blood tests, urinalysis, and a heart ultrasound and ECG. After that, the doctor will decide which blood pressure medications are appropriate for you.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
