Suggest Ways To Manage Pain When Diagnosed With Osteoarthritis

I have recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and have been suffering with pain for almost 6 months. My doctor told me I m having a flare and will feel better when it s over. In the meantime, I m taking Celebrex which helps a little. My question is how long will this flare last? I thought they were only supposed to last a few weeks and I m running out of patience. I am a 64 year old woman in excellent health until this!

Hi,

Noted the history about a 64 years old female suffering from osteoarthritis and on Celebrex not having much relief and understood the concerns.
Although your doctor says it is a flare up but then this should really settle within a few weeks as you have mentioned.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
First of all consult a Rheumatologist so that a proper clinical evaluation can help to get a probable cause and get further investigated by blood tests like RA that is Rheumatoid factor, Uric acid and all as advised.
Rule out diabetes, thyroid diseases.
MRI of the affected ares may help further.
Continue Celebrex and you may further need painkillers.
Oral steroids in short tapering course can help early relief.
Give rest to the affected areas.
Further management as per the findings of investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
