Suggest Ways To Manage Paranoia And Mood Swings

Haldol has been prescribed for my 95 year ole other wise healthy father-in-law for a rapid onset dementia/alzheimers diagnosis. He has been exhibiting violent mood swings and paranoia. There is fear of him harming himself or his wife. Is this the best route to go with someone his age?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

He may need psychotherapy. Treatment likely will focus on increasing general coping skills, especially trust and empathy, as well as on improving social interaction, communication, and self-esteem. Medications—such as antianxiety, antidepressant, or antipsychotic drugs—might be prescribed if the person’s symptoms are extreme, or if he or she also suffers from an associated psychological problem, such as anxiety or depression. Please consult your psychiatrist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
