Suggest Ways To Manage Severe Pain In An Elderly Person
My 90 year old father has 4 broken vertebrae and cracked rib. He has a hard time sleeping and extremely painful when he tries to stand. What about acupuncture/and or herbal treatments? Would it be better to elevate feet and sit in a hard back chair rather than a soft one? He also has a bloated belly and no appetite. Goes to physical therapy and takes vitamin D and Fossimax. Tylenol for pain. I think he is going down hill.
Frankly speaking, surgery is the best option for fixing this problem but due to age constraints another alternative is vertebroplasty or epidural steroid injection and intercostal block these are given by pain physician which I normally do and results are very promising. These procedures will relieve pain and also avoid major painkillers improves quality of life without surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anusha Molugu, Anesthesiologist
