Suggest Ways To Manage Sinus Congestion And Allergies

Hi, I have year-round allergies that I treat with over the counter medications more or less successfully so I am always taking an antihistamine of some kind to prevent sinus congestion/drainage/sneezing. These symptoms never really go away. I also have nail fungus that I am treating aggressively with over the counter products. I recently was filing (with an emery board) down a keratin buildup on an infected toe and it snapped flinging a cloud of powdered keratin directly into my face - eyes, nose and mouth - causing me to gag, choke and cough for a few moments. It left a nasty taste in the back of my throat. I surface washed, brushed my teeth, and blew my nose out the best I could. Since then I have increased sinus congestion and drainage, sinus headaches, a feeling of congestion in the back of my throat, an odd taste in my mouth, and my tongue has streaks of yellow-green on it. I cut sugar out of my diet entirely three days ago, I m using nasal saline sprays 2 or 3 times a day, taking my regular antihistamines and florajen-3 (acidophilus), and drinking lots of unsweetened green tea. Any idea what I may have? Am I doing the right things to get better? Should I try to get in to see a local doctor (which could take up to 4 weeks)?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It looks like you have a sinus infection along with your seasonal allergies leading to the symptoms of post nasal drip, headache, cough and bad taste.
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation
and investigations like PNS view x ray or MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done
accordingly..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants
like Pseudoephadrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room..
You can also be advised decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Do warm compresses around nostrils..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
