Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been told by few family members that i am displaying signs and symptoms of diabetes.. I do have diabetics in my family but not immediate family that i am aware of. I have obtained a blood glucose tester and all accesorys to use it. Is there any way i can successfully monitor myself to see if I definitly need to see if I need to go to my physician and if so what should blood glucose levels be? I am aware that going to physician is best.
You can see what your blood sugars are using the glucometer. If the levels are high, it could be diabetes. But there are other tests that can check for diabetes over time that the doctor would have to order. One of these is a hemoglobin A1c, which gives an idea of what the blood sugar has been doing over a couple of months, rather than just checking a random blood glucose here and there. It is best to see a physician as you are aware. You will need to see one anyway if you measure high levels, and you might want to have other things checked, even if the levels are okay, to see why you are displaying what appear to be symptoms and signs of diabetes. A fasting blood sugar of 126 or higher indicates diabetes. A level between 100 and 125 suggests pre-diabetes. You should also see a doctor for pre-diabetes. Hope this helps.
