Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
rajan, chennai i am taking course of esperal for past 40 days . i am not addiction of drinking. but i want to quit alcohol. how long i have to take esperal 250 mg. if i stopped i fear that i will be going to start. how long i want to take this course.
Hi Rajan, Thanks for posting in HCM. The very fact that you have decided to quit alcohol is a good sign. Now, you need to prove that by quitting on this strength. Esperal is nothing but Disulfiram, which is the right drug used to de-addict from alcohol. Dosage schedule should be initially, a maximum of 500 mg a day, in the morning or in the evening for 1-2 weeks. Then, gradually decreases to a maintenance dose - 250 mg per day. The duration of treatment would be better determined by your doctor.
After you’ve set your goals to either stop or cut back your drinking, write down some ideas on how you can help yourself accomplish these goals. For example: 1. Get rid of temptations. 2. Announce your goal. 3. Be upfront about your new limits. 4. Avoid bad influences. 5. Learn from the past.
It would be good for your health if you quit alcohol. All the best.
