Suggest Ways To Relieve The Restlessness Post Suboxone Withdrawal

My husband has been under medical care for detox of Suboxone/bupenorphine he went through rehab and got release BC he was doing so great and no withdrawal symptoms and day two being at home he did well. Day three at home got restless At night tossed and turned and wasn't any good at all day four was great but when it came to bed time it was horrible once again. We went to see his rehab psychiatrist today and the dr prescribed him trazodone and its 100mg dr told him to take one before bed time and it should help him to get some good sleep and the only medical care for us to seek would be the emergency room at a time like this... He ended up taking 2 trazodones BC dr said if one didn't do it take two. He's also congested and I gave him 50 mg benedryl. If that's not going to help him sleep what is the next best thing to get him some rest?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Suboxone consists of Naloxone and Buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is an partial opioid agonist. The drug is used in opioid detox programs. If the drug use is stopped abruptly after regular use there is risk of withdrawal syndrome. His symptoms like restlessness, insomnia, anxiety etc are occurring due to withdrawal only. Trazodon is an antidepressant commonly used for treatment of insomnia. The drug has not much opioid actions so I don't think this would help much in his symptoms. Over dose will in fact worsen the symptoms.

For relief of his symptoms he should be given proper doses of some opioid either Buprenorphine or Tramadol. Once he becomes stabilised on the medicines then doses should be tapered very gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Some drugs like Clonidine can also help in easing the withdrawal. Please talk to his psychiatrist for evaluation.

Thanks, Hope this helps. Take care
