Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my daughter has been on megace for 5 years for excessive bleeding. she is morbidly obese and they were unable to test for cancer. There has been no bleeding for 5 yrs but she has not been able to loose any weight. what are side effects for coming off the drug? and what can she expect in the weight loss challenge?
Yes, it's true that Megace can cause weight gain as side effect. The mechanism is still unclear, however, patients have noted an increase in appetite as reported from some studies.
She should get involved in a weight loss program, with exercise and diet menu to reduce excessive weight. Plus, can discuss with her doctor to check for other alternatives to Megace with less side effect of gaining weight.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
