Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m presently taking 25mg (split into 2 doses ie 12.5mg) of Metoprolol daily, have been on them since November 2015 for tachycardia and palpitations due to my Graves disease. Symptoms have settled but I want to wean off the metoprolol. How quickly can I do this?
Your symptoms have settled down because of metoprolol. Whenever you stop it, symptoms will recur because recurrence is very common in Grave’s disease and lifelong treatment is required. Abrupt stoppage will suddenly aggravate symptoms and arrhythmia with serious complications. Are you taking any anti-thyroid drug? Advice 1. Continue metoprolol as suggested by your doctor 2. Do not stop metoprolol unless suggested by your doctor 3. Be in touch with your endocrinologist for review of treatment 4. Always monitor your pulse and blood pressure 5. Avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeine and caffeinated beverages 6. Investigations a. Serum T4 b. Serum TSH I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question Thanks
