Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My old relative has been on tramadol for several months for pain. The pain is severe so she just got prescribed a buprenorphine patch. Need to wean off the tramadol, but each time try, pain worse. I understand that the patch reaches equilibrium in about 3 days. Does the tramadol compete for the same receptor as buprenorphine since both opioids, if cont tramadol even though will wean, will it out compete the buprenorphine or other way around?
Both are partial agonists so you will have an additive effect on taking both drugs. You can take Fentanyl patch to wean from Tramadol drug and slowly decrease the concentration.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Archana
