Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been seeing my obgyn for 3 months now. I had an addiction when I found out I was pregnant and told him about it. He started prescribing me methadone. Well I am switching doctors and can t quit my methadone cold turkey. How do I go about explaining this to a new obgyn
Methadone should not be withdrawn abruptly as it can cause severe withdrawal symptoms which may be extremely unpleasant and very rarely life threatening one. Also chances of relapse after sudden withdrawal are more. Methadone should be withdrawn in a tapering manner under the guidance of a health care provider. Process of weaning or withdrawal and dose reduction should be determined by the health care provider.
You should divulge your all relevant information regarding your addiction or drug abuse faithfully to your obstetrician. Your treating doctor will have to manage the alternative drugs prescribed to you for comfortable withdrawal or minimizing your symptoms of withdrawal keeping in mind your status of pregnancy and analyzing the comparative risks vs benefits factors in mind.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
