Suggested Surgery For Labral Tear. Want Second Opinion
My son has been told by his ortho dr that he needs surgery for a labral tear. That was a month ago, He tried therapy but since has Subluxed twice since the first time which was during a baseball game in which he dove for a ball. The good thing is that it's not his throwing arm so my question is, "How do I go about getting a second opinion, because I feel weird and wrong to tell a Dr that we want a second opinion.
Hi thanks for your question. Since he has sublaxed the joint twice, chances are high that he may sub lax his joint in feature, which will increase morbidity of your child. But before getting surgery done you should take a second opinion. There is no harm in getting second opinion and taking a second opinion for any disease is patient's right. Consult a nearby orthopedician who may examine your child along with his investigation and may give you second opinion. Hope this answers your question
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. This is just to inform you that Glenoid labral tears can only be diagnosed by MRI scans. Clinical examination may give a hint about the possibility of having a labral tear based on the amount of instability. These labral tears may not be a problem in the acute setting but will lead to the degenerative changes in the joint if left untreated. I suggest your son to give up "overhead throwing" activities atleast for 2-3 months so as to give ample time for the healing process. Hope this helps
