Surgery For Cataract And Silicone Oil Removal Done, Have Severe Pain In Eye And Temple Area. Help?
I had two different surgeons perform surgery back to back on my right eye. I had a cataract surgery and a follow up surgery to remove the silicone oil left behind from July 2012 after a large Retinal Detachment repair surgery two days ago. Yesterday I developed severe pain over the right eye and temple areas. Opthamologist saw me twice said there are no signs of infection, just some blood collecting around the optic nerve in the eye. Second surgeon said first surgeon left a medium sized cataract fragment that fell to the back of the eye. He couldn t remove due to his discovery of two silicone gas bubbles in the eye that he had to remove. Cue said if the fragment doesn t dissolve on its own he ll have to do a third surgery. The pain over and behind my eye is unbearable, I didn t have any pain close to this level after the first surgery. Help me please. Tim
Hi Tim. The pain you are experiencing following a complicated cataract extraction and retinal surgery has a few causes. The first one that needs to be looked into considering you have/ had silicone oil injected in the vitreous cavity coupled with retained lens material is a raised intraocular pressure or eye pressure. This is very common in a situation such as yours and has to be measured early to make sure there is no damage on the optic nerve. High pressures can be treated with eye drops till the lens matter absorbs.Secondly , you may be having uveitis or an inflammation of the eye due to surgery itself and the manipulation involved or due to retained lens particles. This can be treated with steroid eye drops and dilating drops to give you relief. An ideal treatment for the lens matter left in the eye would be to have the vitreoretinal surgeon remove it. However, small cortical matter can be left behind and observed keeping a watch on the inflammation and eye pressure. Consult your ophthalmologist who will check the intraocular pressures and inflammatory signs and chart out a treatment plan accordingly. Once these are attended to the pain subsides. You may take an oral pain reliever for the time being for temporary relief.
