Suspected Bacterial Meningitis. Green And Yellow Discharge From Nose, Headache. Swab And Mono Test Negative. Viral Infection Or Aseptic Meningitis?

29 year old daughter admitted to hospital with suspected bacterial meningitis. sick with sinusitis like symptoms for previous two weeks with green and yellow discharge from nose, malaise and headache. Then rapid onset of severe headache (worst of her life and she rarely gets headache) fever 102.5 chills, night sweats and pain when moving eyes. Went to urgent care and they suspected sinusitis and prescribed 500 mg of amoxicillin x2 daily. Took three doses and broke out in a rash on face trunk arms legs and back. Discontinued amoxicillian, no relief from headache or fever with extra strength tylenol, 500 mg every 4 hours. On 4th day went to ER. Blood work normal, CT scan normal, Lp showed 20 neutrophils, other wise clear and glucose and protein normal, start i.v. fluids, pain meds, steroids and iv anti-biotics. Infectious disesase dr. discontinues anti biotics after 24 hrs believing that it is not bacterial meningitis, cfs culture negative, nasal swab negative for virus, mono test negative, HIV negative,
Meanwhile headache and fever gone by second say in hospital rash slowly fading. Best guess by drs. Viral infection or aseptic meningitis (but not likely). Any ideas what was going on, worries as she has a 5 month old daughter at home.

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding severe headache with greenish nasal discharge and fever. Your blood tests and CSF examination reports not favoring meningitis.

After careful study of your symptoms , investigation reports and effect of medication you had taken it appears as you are suffering from acute sinusitis not the meningitis.

This acute meningitis is well known for severe headache and fever some times vomiting also. As you had taken antibiotics that had also being effective in sinus infection.

I would like to suggest you to please consult your ENT doctor for clinical examination of your sinuses and necessary investigations to plan for treatment.

Regards.
