Swallowed Hot Food, Burning In Eosphagus, Still Hurts. How To Heal It ?
I swallowed a piece of hot food too quickly about 36 hours ago. I felt it burning my esophagus as it went down, but, by the time I reached for water, it was too late. My esophagus now still hurts (tender) when I swallow food. Is there anything I can do to help this heal? Are there any long term complications from a one time burn to the esophagus? Thanks!
Nothing to worry, please relax. Take a simple proton pump inhibitor drug called omeprazole or pantoprazole on empty stomach for the next few days. Please get it prescribed by your primary care physician.
Drink plenty of water and take bland diet for next few days. Take cold milk, tender coconut water and yoghurt.
Hello,
Whenever there is a heat burn in the esophagus, healing should be aided by modifying the dietary intake from hot and spicy food to a cold bland diet. In addition, coating gels like sucralfate suspension can be given to enhance healing of the mucosa. A single heat burn heals well with timely and adequate treatment and is not known to cause any long-term issues. You should see a gastroenterologist for further advice. Take care.
If consumption of hot food had injured esophagus, it may have caused ulceration over the affected area.
Normally it heals in 5-7 days with symtomatic treatment provided and there is no superinfection.
Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated.
Avoid eating hot and spicy food for some days.
Take course of antioxidants daily two times and analgesic to relieve pain.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.
Hope this helps out.
Regards.
