Tooth pain along with swelling indicates infection of the tooth that had spread to the periapical tissue leading to formation of abscess .

Continue with the antibiotics , take tab brufen twice . Antibiotics and analgesic will give temporary relief . You need to visit the dentist , take an x-ray and go for root canal procedure . Unless the canals are completely devitalised , disinfected and sealed you will face pain and swelling .


Take lukewarm saline gargles 3-4 times it will give a soothing effect , use antiseptic mouthwash gargles like chlorhexidine twice this will prevent infection .
Apply ice packs topically over the swelling this will give a soothing effect.

According to your history i can suspect your infected tooth has gone worse and you have developed a periodontal abscess due to spread of infection to the underlying tissues.

The lump or swelling you can notice under the mandible is nothing but the abscess cavity and it drains the pus in the oral cavity.

This type of periodontal abscess needs to be drained and compressed in position and then followed by a course of antibiotic and analgesic will subside the symptoms of pain and swelling.

once the abscess is drained the infected tooth can be treated by root canal procedure to devitalise it permanently and save the tooth or of the prognosis is poor the tooth can be extracted.

get an x ray done the affected area and approach a dentist for the treatment.

meantime you can start with antibiotic augmentin 625mg with analgesics two times daily, this helps in subsiding the swelling and pain.

after reading your query i will suggest you to go for root canal treatment of your tooth but before that you have to treat the infection.for one week use augmentin 625mg thrice a day,flagyl 400mg twice a day along with a pain killer.
if pain is severe then ask your dentist to do emergency chamber opening of your tooth,this will give you pain relief.

I would suggest you to take metronidazole tablets to relieve swelling as well as infection as per dentist's consultation.

Get root canal treatment done at the earliest.

Entire infected pulp has to be extirpated out to relieve the underlying infection.

Meanwhile,gargle frequently with warm saline.

the pain and swelling is due to infected tooth
now since your friend has taken only one dose of antibiotic and normally antibiotic takes 3-4 doses to come in effect s
so dont worry the pain will subside in a days time
as far as my suggestion he can take 10 mg of omnacortil twice daily to reduce the swelling and pain
also he can try luke warm saline rinses followed by cold pack from outside 6-8 times per day , that will tremendously reduce the swelling
saying that i will also like to advise your friend that he should go for the root canal treatment as soon as possible because relief from all the medication is only temporarry and will last only for a few days

Swelling is because of infection in your lower molar tooth...that has ended up with pus formation....and numbness is due to pressure on the nerve...

So you have to go for Root canal treatment...

Do warm saline rinses at least 4-5times/day...

Take analgesic accoding to the prescription of Dentist...

Keep that area clean after every meal...

Get your treatment done as soon as possible....

Please do not be worried, if there is just increased swelling,do not apply any warm compression on that side or do not lie on to that side.Any warmth to the infected side will increase the swelling.

As you have already started antibiotics there is nothing to worry about.Please take the complete course and once the pus gets localized, it can be well drained through root canal.

Your Friend's tooth is infected that is why abscess has formed.
Consult dentist immediately for Root canal treatment as tooth needs an emergency opening done for pus discharge.
Follow antibiotic prescription and take tablet Chymocip two times a day for 3 days for swelling to resolve.

This is due to sudden response of the bacteria to the medication. It will come down slowly. But, I would recommend you to start the rootcanal treatment as adviced by the dentist and in due course take medication for 5 days.
