Swollen Mouth Roof, Painful, Pain In Upper Right Molars. Any Ideas?

I noticed the roof of my mouth was sore and a little swollen on the right side earlier this evening. I was pushing on it a little with my tongue because the pressure stopped the throbbing. But then all of a sudden the pain spread to my jaw and inner ear. I went to sleep and was woken up to a horrible throbbing pain in my upper right molars (about 3 or 4 teeth).

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

I understand that you have a swelling on your palate [ roof of your mouth] This could be a sign of infection or abscess from decayed tooth or gum infection like periodontitis. Since you are also complaining of throbbing pain it is better you visit a dentist who will put you on antibiotics and painkiller and take an xray to make a treatment plan.

first check is there any tooth tender on percussion i.e are u feeling any pressure on pain during chewing hard food?swelling and ulceration of the palatal mucosa(roof of your mouth) mainly caused by either from any carious tooth with pulpal involvement having periapical abscess.or periodontal abscess rld to that tooth.both cases treatment protocol is different.in case periapical abscess u hav to tak anti biotic like amoxycillin 500mg+clavulanic acid 125 mg and analgesic zerodol-p ,if u want to save the tooth thn go for rct o.w extraction will b the option.
fro periodontal problem scaling or root planning will solve your problem

Hello there ,

Thanks for writing your query,

Swelling in the palatal area is may be due to infection in the adjoining teeth that has spread to the surrounding area.

as you have mentioned you have pain in the upper right molars , pain in the jaw and ear , it is clear that the origin of pain is associated with the dental infection.

dental pain is often radiating in nature and it spreads to jaw , ear, head and neck.

Tooth ache indicates bacterial decay or infection in the tooth that involves the tooth nerve tissues .

such infected tooth needs to be treated by a root canal procedure so please consider getting the treatment done by consulting a dentist.

you may need an OPG radiographic examination done for your teeth to confirm the spread of infection or to rule out the exact cause of the pain.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

According to your clinical history is suppose that swelling at the roof of the mouth can be due to decayed tooth draining its abscess in the palate, pain in the jaw and ear is due to dental reasons.
I would suggest you to visit the Dentist and get the checkup done.
Take an x-ray of the upper teeth region, depending upon which a root canal treatment of the affected tooth has to be performed.
Start with the course of antibiotics and analgesics.
Take lukewarm saline and antiseptic mouthwash gargles.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.

Hope this helps out.

Hello Leahhoman,

Thanks for writing to us.

Swollen roof of mouth along with pain in associated molar tooth may be due to-

Periodontal infection of teeth spread into abscess formation.
Deep CARIES resulting in formation of periapical infection.
I would suggest you to get deep scaling done initially.
An x-ray as well as clinical evaluation will help to diagnose the problem underlying.
Pus if present, has to be drained and curetted.
Root canal treatment has to be done if required.
Take complete course of antibiotics-analgesics too.
Hope this helps.
