Swollen Painful Veins. Prevention?

Last night I had swollen veins on my left side of my head and randomly there would be a shooting pain that flowed through them. My wife looked it up on the web and they said it could be because pinched nerve in your neck. My neck has hurt but not all the time. It also said that it could be over worked muscles pinching the veins making them over work. Today my veins are not swollen but still hurt, is it because they were so swollen? My question to you is this commom? How do i prevent this? and how urgent is something like this?

hi
Giant Cell arteritis(GCA)
A new headache occurs in at least two-thirds of patients. Headache may have a variety of presentations in GCA, but its critical feature is that it is new. Although headache is the chief complaint in many patients presenting with GCA, in some this symptom must be elicited by direct questioning.

The classic GCA headache is located in temporal regions. However, GCA headaches may also occur in frontal or occipital areas or be generalized. The headaches may become progressively worse but can also wax and wane, sometimes subsiding temporarily before treatment is started
