Taken Azithromycin For Sinus Infection. Taking Reclipsen. Efficiency Reduced?
I was prescribed azithromycin 5 day pill z-pack for a sinus infection. I finished the full dosage last Monday. I am on the birth control reclipsen--my doctor's office said to use a back up method for the time I was taking the antibiotics plus 7 more days. My question is--since this particular antibiotic stays in your system for 5 extra days after you finish the dose, does the 7 extra days I should use back up start after I took the last pill or after the 5 additional days it is in my system?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Jay Patel's Response
Hi,
Based on the information it seems that you are taking birth control pill, and you doctor advice you to wait for week in case any antibiotics is needed. And you want us to clarify exactly what he meant, because as per you research the antibiotics takes 5 extra days to go out of system.
Here is what he meant, if today (aug-3 ) is the last day for your antibiotics you must wait till 9 aug and start taking birth control pills from aug-10 onwards. Yes even if the antibiotics stays for 5 extra days ( the lag of 7days is for the antibiotics to clear from blood)
Thanks for the query. hope it helps. Dr. JAY PATEL.
