Taken MRI For Back And Hip Pain. What Does Findings Mean?
Thanks for taking my question. I had an MRI for severe lower back and right hip/leg pain. Here is one aspect from the report: "At L5-S1, there is a shallow left paracentral disk protrusion
effacing the ventral surface of the thecal sac without causing a
true central canal stenosis. The neural foramina are patent.
There is moderately severe bilateral facet arthropathy." Can you provide a brief explanation for what this should me to me?
thanks
Hello, You have a shallow left paracentral disk protrusion, without causing central canal stenosis. This is the major finding. An individual suffering from paracentral disc protrusion may experience a variety of symptoms, which will vary depending on the location and severity of the deterioration. Symptoms vary as per extent of its interference with a nerve. The most common disc protrusion symptoms include: local pain, muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, radiating pain along the nerve, and more. As there is no pressure over the nerve, medically we can treat by 1) Exercise, physical therapy, or yoga, the application of heat or ice, back brace for short term use and pain medications oral or injection, With this mangement you will be alright. Surgery not now. Best wishes
The intervertebral disc at the L5-S1 level has prolapsed and is protruding towards the front of the spinal canal. It has not caused spinal canal stenosis. There is spinal facet arthropathy which may cause back pain .
