Taken Amoxicillin For Tooth Abscess. Itching In Lower Back, Redness, Swelling. Reaction To Antibiotics?
Hi. I was on a ten day course of Amoxicillin for a tooth abcess. The day after I stopped them I started itching on my lower back above my bottom...then it started on my foot ...I had redness and slight swelling where i scratched ... It s been a week tomorrow and I am not as itchy but where I do itch a red mark appears and then goes away after 20-30mins...not sore or even all that itchy but strange... If I run my fingernail down my arm a red lineappears in the exact same place! It s worrying me. Could this be a reaction to the antibiotics? Will it resolve ? Many thanks. Phil

Hi,
Amoxycilllin is prone to develop allergy in some patients. For you till you take the drug for 10 days there was NO reaction by the body to release Histamine which produces allergic reaction. Reaction started after you stopped the drug. Whatever may be the presentation of symptoms, even though Amoxycillin can't be ruled out it is very difficult to diagnose cause of skin allergy. The way you explain allergic reaction goes in favor of urticaria. The treatment is antihistamine & if necessary steroids. consult your physician.
