Taking Almita For Stage 3 NSCLC. Fever After Blood Transfusion. X-ray Shows No Cancer In Chest. What Is Going On?
my mom has stage 3 a nsclc and has been taken almita. she has had 4 treatments with this drug and is scheduled for a pet scan in a week. she had a blood transfusion about 5 weeks ago and has been running a low grade fever only at night since the transfusion. we asked the doctor and he doesn't seem to be too worried about it. she went to the general doctor about her fever a week ago and he says she has an upper respiratory infection and said it would go away on it's own. He took and xray of her chest and we could see the cancer in there but no other new signs of the cancer in the xray. what is going on with her? thank you
Hi, fever after chemotherapy needs urgent blood examination. there is a chance of febrile neutropenia. so a complete blood count is mandatory. if complete count is normal then possibility of other infective cause like viral infection may be suspected. past history of tuberculosis to be taken. Common causes of fever to be ruled out also. take care of your mother.
If your mom is having temperature more than 100.4 D F after alimta chemotherapy then u should immediately start antibiotic (amoxicillin + clavulanic acid combination) clavum 625 mg thrice daily after food for 7 days and T.Levofloxacin 500 mg once a day for 5 days. As this drug causes myelosuppression chances of infection is more so the start of oral antibiotics.
