Taking Lumigan And Timolol For Glaucoma. Low Blood Pressure. Help
Hello. I am a 52 y.o. female with glaucoma . I take lumigan at night and timolol in occudose in the morning. With treatment, my pressures are in the low 20 s. My concern is that my blood pressure is very low, around 89/62. Do you think I should check with my ophthalmologist about stopping the timolol and trying something else in the morning? Thank you.
Hello. Was your blood pressure low before you started these eye drops? Beta blockers (like Timolol) are used to lower blood pressure, but in eye drops the concentration is very low, and you can always prevent systemic (into your blood stream) absorption, by applying gentle pressure on the inner corner of your eye after putting your eye drops. If your eye pressure is optimal for your optic nerve condition and visual fields, then a combination drop like Ganfort (Lumigan + timolol) used at night may be adequate. Please consult your ophthalmologist.
Hello, Timolol a beta blocker used for treatment of glaucoma to lower the intra ocular pressure. Timolol is known to reduce the blood pressure rarely especially when used with systemic betablockers which are used for treatment of blood pressure. Do not stop timolol on your own please do consult ophthalmologist he will be able to substitute timolol with some other drug. Thank you
The best way to avoid having the eye drops getting into your body immediately is to do what is known as punctal pressure. You can discuss it your doctor on how to best do that. There is a canal that connects your eyes, with your nose, and hence when we cry we get runny nose. And the nose is lined with a mucosa with rich blood supply that can make the medicine get in our body. By placing pressure between the eye and nose with your finger you can reduce the ability of the medicine to get into your body. You also make an excellent point that you should speak with your doctor because there are classes of drugs that don't have an effect on the blood pressure such as azopt or trusopt that your doctor can use. Good luck.
