Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Taking Mirapex. Can I Switch To Gabapentin? Side Effects?
I have been taking 0.5 mg. Mirapex since about 2007 for restless leg symptoms (RLS). Now my doctor wants to switch me over to Gabapentin 300 mg. capsule every day 2 hours before bedtime. I checked the drug info and see that Gabapentin has many negative side effects. My RLS are much less and I have been taking the Mirapex mostly to help me sleep through the night. What is the safer med to take? I have googled both of these drugs and now am confused. My doc told me it takes 2 mos. to get the Mirapex out of one's system and really wants me to stop taking it. Is it actually harder on ones CNS than Gabapentin?
Welcome to HCM.YOur doctor would not shift you from Mirapax to Gabapentin without reason.Gabapentin is generally well tolerated and and you may not have all the serious side effects you have read about on the net.It would be prudent to follow the advice of your doctor/Physican after discussing the matter with him.
