Taking Propranolol For Migraine. Taking Sumatriptipan For Headache. Have Low BP, Tingling Legs, Dizziness. Suggestions?

Hi, I have been taking Propranolal HCI 60 mg for migraine headaches for the past two years. (one a day) I also take sumatriptipan when I get a headache (50 mg) I am noticing side effects that I believe may be caused from the Propranolal. Low blood pressure readings. ( in the 80's and 90's over 60's) tingly sensation in lower legs, low energy, sometimes abit dizzy when walking. I am tying to go off the meds and are taking have the prescribed dose for a couple of weeks but then I get a headache and go back on the prop. again. I have tried this a couple of times over the past year and so far haven;t succeeded. I plan to continue with the half dose and see if I can get off this drug. Any suggestions? Linda

hi linda,
as you have observed, the low bp, tingling sensation, dizziness are due to propranolol. this is because there is blood vessel dilation in general. you can go for half the dose, or artery dilation specific to brain like flunarizine which will not have low bp effect, and will have dizziness and weakness to lesser extent.

wishing you good health

Hello,
Propranolol is a beta blocker which is quite commonly used for prevention of migraine headaches however it can cause various symptoms
Like tiredness,low energy,dizziness,low blood pressure,low pulse rate etc .
Since it is causing you problems you may switch to some other drug like sodium valproate or flunarizine etc but stopping propranolol cold turkey is a big problem.
Ideally you should withdraw from the drug very slowly by reducing your dosage by 10 mg every 3-4 weeks and so on.This way you can come out of it gradually.
It is quite possible that your prevention of migraine can be achieved by lesser dose of propranolol.
Discuss about it with your treating doctor.
Thanks
