Cough and cold symptoms can last 7 to 10 days in most persons. In some cases the cough can last up to 6 weeks after the viral infection has resolved.
The cough is as a result of the viral infection irritating the respiratory tract, increased mucus production and in some cases, partial closure of the airways.
There are cough suppressants available over the counter that she may use. If the cough is wet then she may want to use a mucolytic agent that will break up the mucus and make it easier to expel it. These should also be available over the counter.
Honey is also thought to help with coughs.
I hope this helps
