Taking Antibiotics For Cough. What Do You Recommend?

hi, i am suffering from cough for a month now. it started with just occasional coughing but it became severe when i ignored it. I am living in the philippines, its somewhat cold now yet i could hardly talk because of coughing. I have been taking antibiotics , yet no effects turned out. I took carboscistine medicines yet there is no effect. I took some orofar lozenges yet it only soothes the itch of coughing. what do you recommend? I have fever at night/afternoon and vomiting after i eat as well. thanks you

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your problems regarding your cough which is persisting in spite of the antibiotics.

You need to understand that the cough will not be due to infection and will be because of reflux which can cause irritation and cough especially after antibiotics.
You need to immediately start on a reflux medication such as what i give my patients like tablet pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily before food for two weeks at least along with an antacid syrup thrice daily after food for two weeks at least.

Also avoid any cold food or fluid and avoid anything spicy, oily and high flavored.

Furthermore do not strain your voice and do not frequently clear your throat
Take steam inhalation and try to always take warm fluid to keep your throat form drying.

Wait for two weeks and watch. If you are not feeling better then you must take a throat swab, upper GI endoscopy and sputum examination and get back to me.

take care
