Taking Prednisone After Severe Polymyalgia Rheumatic Attack. Having Moderate Headaches. Want To Stop Prednisone. Opinion?

Hi I have been taking prednisone for 1 week following a severe polymyalgia rheumatic attack. I am taking 20mg . I am also taking tramadol for 2 vertebral fractures suffered a moth ago. I have moderate headaches night and morning usually but not always relieved by taking 2x 500mg paracetamol. I would like to be able to stop the prednisone at least. Any suggestions please.

Dear sir

Prednisolone is a longer acting steroids, which should not bee taken for a longermtime, usually it is taken in autoimmune conditions. But generally it should not be taken for a longer time..

Secondly before stopping any steroids you need to taper the dosage and then stop it.. so consult your doctor once..

Thanks

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Anshul Varshney's  Response
Dear Friend
You have taken a nice decision to stop prednisolone, but you can or you can't can br decided by your treating physician and on how your body will respond to withdrawl.

Usually we start tapering the dose and then stop it. Don't abruptly discontinue it.

Tramadol since you are taking can helo you in falling asleep also, as it is a sedative.

I suggest you that you should also consider removing tramadol from youur list too, as it can addictive potential.

You can consider short -trem treatment with benzodiazapines like etizolam, under guidance of your doctor.

Wish you a good health
