Taking Synthroids After Having Thyroid Removed. What Should Dosage Be?
I am taking synthroids for many years. I had my thyroid partially removed 20 yrs ago not malignant lump. I have a question on doseage. Larger number dose lower thyroid replacement 'lower number dose higher assist replacement. Not sure if I said it right. I was taking 200 in strength now 150. Is my thyroid going to increase or decrease in production
You have undergone surgery for nonmalignant thyroid and taking supplementation of thyroid hormone.
Your thyroid gland is not producing sufficient hormone hence Synthroid is given as treatment.
It is monitored through thyroid function TSH level if level of TSH rises then dose of Thyroxine needs to be increased and if TSH is low and symptoms of overactive thyroid are there then dose needs to be reduced.
You should take Thyroid function periodically and adjust the dose of Thyroxine accordingly.
You should investigate for autoimmune process which may be reducing production of Thyroid hormone by anti TPO and anti thyroglobulin antibody.
Hope this clears your doubt. Take care. Good Luck Dr.Akhilesh Dubey M.D
