Test For Cholesterol, Triglyceride, SGOT & SGPT Done. On Essentiale & Hepavit. Is This Medicine Cause Bad Result Of SGOT And SGPT?
Hi good morning. My mom underwent yesterday her regular laboratory test for CHOLESTEROL, TRIGLYCERIDE, SGOT & SGPT. Unfortunately the results of the SGOT & SGPT were 114.6 & 104.50 U/L respectively. She is taking ESSENTIALE & HEPAVIT for a year already as per her Doctor's prescription and stopped the medicine for Cholesterol for it is the reason of the bad result of her SGOT & SGPT. while her CHOLESTEROL is 6.13 mmo./L and Triglyceride is 1.82 mmol/L. My question Doc is this, inspite of taking those medicines prescribed (essentiale & Hepavit) why these SGOT & SGPT still the same. Would you prescribe my mom another medicine which is best for her? Thank you.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Raised SGOT and SGPT levels occur due to damage to the liver cells. Damage can occur due to many reasons like drugs, infections etc. However, the levels of both SGOT and SGPT are not very high thus suggesting continuous damage to some of the heapatocytes. The drugs that your mother is taking are hepato-protective but they will not treat or cure the damage already occurring. Kindly get a screening test for viruses especially hepatitis B virus. In case the test for hepatitis B is reactive, anti-virals to clear the viral infection are required.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
