Hello, and thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic!
The feeling of something "stuck" in the back of the throat, along with the history you give of coughing could possibly be being caused by
acid reflux, or GERD (
gastroesophageal reflux disease). This occurs when acid that should remain in the stomach moves up the
esophagus toward the mouth. If you notice that after eating you occasionally have
heartburn, and that this sensation is worse if you lay down after eating, that would support this diagnosis as well.
There are many things you can do to limit this problem. You can elevate the head of the bed you sleep in. Losing weight, stopping
smoking, and limiting alcohol intake will all help as well. Decreasing the amount of fatty foods, caffeine, spicy foods, or any other foods that you notice make the symptoms worse would be a good idea as well.
If none of these things help, you may try taking over the counter medications such as
ranitidine or
famotidine (follow the instructions on the package).
I would also strongly recommend making an appointment with your doctor. The symptoms you describe could be caused by other things which are more serious but far less common. You should be examined to make sure that acid reflux is the cause of your symptoms.
I hope I have given you some helpful information, and wish you the best of health.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kinney
