Trigeminal Neuralgia And Taking Medicines For Pain. Causes For Neuralgia, Remedy Or Consult Neurologist?

My husband has had Trigeminal Neuralgia, for 7 months now, and is still taking a lot of medication to kill the pain.
He first thought, he had a bad infection in his back tooth, but after xrays and getting it pulled, still has all the pain.
Can you tell us, what causes the neuralgia, and is there anything more that can be done for it, or should he see
a neurologist. Do you have any idea, what causes it. Thank you. T. Rooney

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

The pain in the trigemminal neuralgia occurs due to stimulation of specific trigger points. It is mainly caused due to pressure on the trigemminal nerve due to the underlying disease, it can be a blood vessel, multiple scleroisis, a tumor or a physical damage to the nerve.
I would suggest you to visit to an Oral Surgeon nad get the thorough checkup done. Medications are the first treatmnet of trigemminal neuralgia and most patients respond well and donot require subsequent surgery.
There are various surgical techniques and injectables like injection of alcohol can be done to give temporary relief to the pain.
Discuss this with your Doctor.

Hope you find this as helpful,

Regards..
