Type 2 Diabetic. Taking Medication For High BP. Found Protein In Urine. Serious?
I am type 2 diabetic, a1c is 5.5, take meds for high blood pressure which is under control and now they find protein in my urine. Should I be worried? I've only been diagnosed with diabetes in the last 2 years and i was teetering on the edge of pre-diabetes for a long time. Could my kidneys have been damaged that much so quickly?
Hi, Welcome to HCM, You have diabetes type II for more than 2 years, and detected to have proteins in urine. It is not common to have complication so soon but rarely possible or some other kidney disease may be there. First it must be confirmed that is by 24 hour urine albumin measurement (between 30–300 mg/24 hours) 0r albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) and microalbuminuria is defined as ACR 3.5 mg/mmol (female) or 2.5 mg/mmol(male). There are other causes like urinary infection or high grade fever can cause some protein in urine, even long standing high blood pressure can damage kidneys. Please visit Nephrologist and go for confirmatory test first and treatment depends on exact cause.Ultrasonography will help in the diagnosis. Hope this helps. Please take care. Good Luck.
