Underwent Surgery To Remove Impacted Molar. Have Pain. Suggested Digital OPG. Advice?
Hi,I am 22 and had undergone a surgery to remove a horizontally impacted third molar on my lower left jaw.The surgery was performed on 6th May and the area has healed completely.I had no pain during or after the surgery but since last few days I am experiencing a dull throbbing pain on my left side.I cant pinpoint the exact location of the pain but its there. It goes away only with painkillers only to return after after 6-7 hours later. My surgeon suggested a digital OPG and I am attaching a scanned copy of the same. Please help as my doctor is unable to find any problem clinically :-(.
Hello, If clinically there is no underlying infection,OPG of the area will help to find out any infection/root pieces remaining within the socket. If required, the socket has to be curetted and rinsed with betadine. Rinse mouth after every meals to prevent food lodgement. Maintain oral hygiene well. Avoid spicy ,sour foods. Visit a dentist for further reference. Take care.
Hi, Welcome to HCM forum, Few days after extraction you are having pain. This pain seems to be related to other teeth. So, OPG will make it easy to rule out the reason of pain. This dull, throbbing pain can also be due to gum disease. Consult dentist to rule out the reason and go for a particular treatment then Wishing you cure soon Take care
A dull throbbing pain on left side indicates towards dry socket.please revisit your dentist and get the clinical evaluation done.
If its a case of dry socket upon clinical examination, then the treatment modality is antiseptic dressing in the healing socket along with antibiotics and analgesics.
Please go for second opinion too in such a case,as it appears to be dry socket. Also OPG is of little or no use in this case.
As per your history, your pain started after 3 to 4 weeks after surgery, It is unusual that the pain is from your operated tooth area. The most possible reason of this kind of pain is due to the loss of attachement of gingiva(gum) from the tooth in front of the operated tooth, as a result of surgical procedure. Because of laceration of that area the gum attachment of the tooth in front is receding during the healing process and that cause a dull pain as you have described, because of the exposure of root surface of the front tooth. Your OPG is not visible here. An IOPA radiograph of that area will more precisely diagnose the problem. This type of condition generally heals by itself over the time. If not a small surgical procedure is needed and usually done by a PERIODONTIST. Till then analgesics is the only answer. Thanks
