Hello,
Intrauterine infection with syphilis can result in still birth or prematurity. Infected infants may have early manifestations like hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, rash, oedema, osteochondritis, haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia etc. in the first months of life.
Untreated infants can develop late manifestations 5-40 years later, which affect CNS, bones, teeth eyes and skin. Identification and appropriate treatment of infants with congenital syphilis is important to prevent these late complications.
The infant should be investigated for congenital syphilis and treated properly before discharge.
The mother should be treated aggressively for syphilis during her entire term with intramuscular benzathine penicillin in all the three trimesters.
Abide completely by your doctor's instruction.
Thanks
