Very Slow Flow During Urination. Ultrasound Of Prostrate Showed Mild Growth. No Relief From Citralka Syrup And Ciprox. Advice

I feel trouble in urinating. It comes very slow. I took ultra sound of my prostrate few months before which showed mild growth. Yesterday i consulted doctor who advised me to take Citralka syrup ( 3 times a day mixed in little water ) and Ciprox 500 mg two times a day.
I still feel trouble in taking out urine. Please advise me. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello sir and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

Enlargement of the prostate is an age-related condition, which is encountered quite often by doctor's. Do not worry about this. Has the doctor graded the enlargement of the prostate, as you have mentioned 'mild', this could be grade 1.

Now let me explain the effects of prostate enlargement and the symptoms seen. The enlargement of the prostate puts pressure on the urethra, which is responsible for draining urine from the urinary bladder to the external environment. When pressure is applied on the urethra, there is a decrease in flow of urine, leading to some amount of stagnation of urine. This stagnation causes the accumulation of bacteria, which in turn can lead to infections.

Now let me list the symptoms of prostate enlargement:
-Decreased flow of urine
-Dribbling of urine on feet
-Poor stream
-Waiting for urine to pass
-Feeling of incomplete evacuation of urine
-Continuous feeling of a full bladder
-Abdominal pain
-Nocturia (night urination)
-Painful urination (not always)
-Infections of the urinary tract

Now that this is clear, I would like to highlight the main point. Which is the cause. The cause in your case, is clearly the prostate enlargement. But, your doctor is only treating the infection, which is a symptom of the prostate enlargement. It is important to treat the infection, but is secondary to treatment of the prostate enlargement.

In grade 1 prostate enlargement, the advised treatment is medical therapy (eg. alpha blockers, etc.), which will help in controlling the symptoms and prevent progression of the condition. Please consult your doctor for the same.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
