Visible Blood Vessel On Face, Paleness. Express Concern?
My 7 year old son has a blood vessel running down the right side of his face that is very visible. Several people have asked me about it out of concern. He has had it for as long as I can remember, the visibility of it kind of comes and goes. Where he is pale from being in all winter it is more prominent right now. His pediatrician has never seemed to notice it nor have I pointed it out. Should I be concerned? Should I point it out the next time we see him?
Hello: Spider veins (also known as 'nevus araneus', 'spider telangectasias', 'spider nevus') are small, enlarged superficial blood vessels that have a red to violet tint and occur frequently on the face of children. The causes of spider nevi are multifactorial, including hormonal changes, sun exposure, genetic predisposition, and (rarely) associated with liver disorders (in older adults). You should not be very concerned, however, it is always a good idea to point it out to your pediatrician.
