Was Aggressive To Nurse And Put On Rispiridone. Has Dementia And Signs Of Minor Stroke. Has Broken Pelvis. Side Effect For Rispiridone?

My elderly dad has been put on rispiridone by the hospital after 2 episodes of aggression towards a nurse (lashing out and trying to hit them). He has dementia and there were signs of minor stroke on his brain scan, he also has been on antibiotics for pnumonia. He is irritable and keeps trying to get out of bed, he also has a broken pelvis after a fall. I am worried about the risks I have read about with this drug and don't know if I should ask more questions about why they have chosen this drug?

Hi,

I understand your concerns about your dad. You haven't mentioned what dosage of risperidone has been prescribed to your father. In my experience, risperidone in low dosages is quite safe and since, in dementia usually low dosages are prescribed, I feel that you need not worry about risks. Risperidone will control his aggression and make it easier for others to help him.

Best wishes.
