Was Hit In The Eye. Itching, Swelling, Blood Shot And Seeing Black Bug Type Things In Her Peripheral Vision. Are The Black Spots An Indication Of Damage To The Eye Or Something Else?

Last night my daughter was hit in the eye with a tennis ball. We iced it until she went to sleep. This morning there is very slight swelling, eye area is tender but no bruising, eye looks blood shot, and she says that she sees black bug type things in her peripheral vision. She is icing again this morning. Are the black spots an indication of damage to the eye or something else? Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,

The symptoms of swelling, pain, redness in the eye and black spots in the peripheral visual fields are of concern.
The injury has caused some kind of bleeding of small blood vessels of the eye.
Swelling and tenderness are due to bleeding in the superficial tissue.
Black spots in the visual field are most probably due to some kind of bleeding in the vitreous humor. Vitreous humor is the gelatinous material present in the posterior chamber.
Any bleeding in this compartment causes defects in the visual field.

However, the exact location of the injury can only be determined by a clinical examination of the eye.
You need to visit an ophthalmologist.
The further management depends after determination of site of injury.
The swelling can be relieved by cold compresses.

Thanks and take care.

WHEN THESE IS BLEEDING THE BLOOD COTS BEHIND THE SKIN OR CAN BE ANY PACE WHICH LOOK BLACK
IT TAKES 3 WEEK TO CLEAR THE BLOOD CLOT SO YOU CAN TAKE METROGYL
SOME ANTI ALLERGICS LIKE ALLEGRA 30 MG BD
CHROMAL FORTE EYE DROPS ALTERNATING WITH CIPLOX EYE DROPS 3-4 TIMES A DAY
AND NEOMYCIN H EYE OINTMENT ON AFFECTED AREA
CAN GIVE FOR WK
AND METROGYL STOP AFTER 5 DAYS
BUT MUST CONSULT YOUR OPTHALMOLOGIST WHO CAN JUDGE AFTER PHYSICALLY EXAMINING THE PATIENT
