Was Taking Glyburide And Metformin. Another Prescribed Metformin Separate Pill And Glipizide. Safe? Guide?

I was taking glyburide 1,25 and metformin 250 in one pill one time per day. Another doctor, previous retired, has now put me on metformin 500 separate pill 2 per day and glipizide 2.5 one pill once per day. she said glyburide was a high risk pill and she did not like her patients on high risk pills. I had been taking the other for over 8 years and it seems that she is increasing it too much at one time on the metformin. My blood sugar was running around 145 in the mornings and I think has been for several months. I hardly ever checked it and now I am afraid not to. I thought I should just increase my one pill glyburide/metformin to two a day to bring down my blood sugar, but whe was chomping at the bits about the glyburide. What is so bad wrong with this combination pill which I have been taking and doing fine, only going to the doctor every 4 months for the past 8 years and he always told me whatever I was doing to keep doing it?

Hello,
People suffering from diabetes type 2 basically two problems.
One is less insulin production and other is insulin resistance.
An ideal anti diabetic medicine is that which reduces cellular insulin sensitivity, reduces excess intestinal glucose absorption, reduces production of glucose from liver, promotes weight loss and reduces cardiovascular complications.
METFORMIN is the only anti diabetic which does all the above mentioned actions and so it is the most desirable drug for control of diabetes. The maximum dose of METFORMIN which can be given in a day is 2550 mg.
So essentially you are taking too less a dose of metformin.Your doctor is right in increasing he dose of metformin from 250 to 1000 mg a day,as it is one of the safest anti diabetic drug.
As far as glyburide and GLICLAZIDE is concerned, both belong to sulfonylureas class, but since glyburide is long acting and has more chances of developing hypoglycemia ,doctors generally avoid it .
But since you have been using it for past 8 years, there is no harm in continuing it but the dose may be increased to double.
Gluburide is given once a day as it is long acting.
you may discuss about it with your doctor and abide by her instruction,as she is your well wisher and her judgement should not be doubted.
Thanks

DEAR SIR/MADAM

BOTH GLIPIZIDE AND GLYBURIDE ARE KNOWN TO CAUSE HYPOGLYCEMIA.

GLYBURIDE IS LONGER ACTING AND GLIPIZE IS SHORTER ACTING.

IF YOU HAVE ANY RESIDUAL RENAL DISORDERS, BOTH ARE DANGEROUS AS THEY MAY CAUSE SERIOUS LOW BLOOD SUGARS AND EVEN GLYBURIDE CAN CAUSE PROLONGED SUGARS.

SECONDLY IF YOUR PARAMETERS WERE NORMAL AND DOING WELL WITH GLYBURIDE, THEN YOU CAN CONTINUE WITH IT.

THANKS
