We Would Just Like To Know If The Ectropy Can Prevent Conception ?
I have a cervical ectropy which causes excessive amounts of post-coital bleeding (apparently due to a large blood vessel). I have had numerous tests and am told it is due to contraceptives previously taken (I\'ve been off these since June 09). I have a clear biopsy and have had STD tests which are clear. I and my partner are also hoping to conceive and have been loosely trying for 12 months. I am due some surgery for the ectropy soon but would like to know if the ectropy is damping my chances of conceiving, given the amount of blood. I fully understand my menstrual cycle and am having a normal cycle with tested evidence of LH at regular intervals each month. My partner and I are concerned but there is no pressure or stress regarding the issue between us. We would just like to know if the ectropy can prevent conception and some information as to how. thanks
I just dealt with this same issue. I've had cervical ectropion for 2 years, and have had both cryosurgery for it as well has 2 treatments with silver nitrate. I just went for my annual exam yesterday and asked my gyn about the fertility issue or pregnancy issue. He said that women with cervical ectropion may just experience more spotting in the first trimester of their pregnancies, but their fertility is not affected at all. Realize that depending on the degree of inflammation on the cervix, the ectropion may persist even with treatment. Of all gyn issues to have of the cervix, this luckily is the easier one to deal with and is not an indicator of cervical cancer.

General & Family Physician, Dr. P. Mahesh's Response
Hi,
welcome to HCM.
Cervical Ectopy also known as cervical erosion is caused by extension of normal cervical canal inner lining, extending to the external surface which is normally much stronger than the delicate cervical canal lining.
This sometimes causes bleeding during intercourse. and could be a result of long term use of contraceptives.
This should not prevent conception, but may cause spotting and bleeding during pregnancy. It would be better if you treat the condition before trying to conceive.
Treatments available are chemical cauterization (as already mentioned earlier by someone else), cryotherapy (freezing technique), diathermy (heat technique) or Laser surgery to destroy these cells in abnormal location.
Wishing you all the best.
