Weak Right Leg, Pain Radiating Down. Have Hypertension. Diabetes. History Of Herniated Lumbar Disc. What Could This Be?

My right leg has been sporadically weak. It almost buckles when I stand. The pain runs instantly down the outer part of my leg. It just started yesterday. I have a history of herniated lumbar disc, But typically the pain is in my back and down right leg. I am overweight (222). I have hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Thanks

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The weakness in the leg with a radiating pain in the leg is due to the herniated lumbar discs. This needs an MRI scan to find out the extent of nerve compression it is causing.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Vidya KR's  Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

As you are having herniated lumbar disc, your pain in right leg is suggestive of progression of disc herniation resulting in compression over nerve.
Get examined by your doctor.
Physiotherapy and muscle strengthening exercise are useful. Avoid lifting heavy weight and bending exercises.

Weight reduction is helpful in your condition.
Steroid injections are given locally to reduce pain.
If not correctable by these measures you may need to get surgery for herniated disc.

Hope this helps you.

Regards
