What Are Some Consequences Of Unintentional Ingestion Of Vicks By Infant?
Hi Doctor, My 14 month old baby girl was playing with the vicks bottle and accidentally opened it and may have eaten a bit of it. She had a little bit on her finger and near her mouth. This happened almost 3 hours ago and i have been observing her keenly. She seemed very active, had her dinner without any difficulty. I am however extremely worried as i don t know how much she may have consumed. It maybe 2-3 minutes that i didn t notice her. Not more than that. The content in the bottle also may not be too less than what it originally was. Please advice. Thanks.
This depends on the actual amount ingested. Very minor quantities are unlikely to cause serious effects. It is camphor component that is causing more trouble. Just closely watch her for next 24 hours- if she develops nausea, vomiting, loos stools, drowsiness or abnormal movements (shaking of limbs or up rolling of eyes as in seizure), take her immediately to ER. If no such issues and she remains active for this duration, chance of any poisoning is unlikely
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
