General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello

Amniocentesis is a prenatal medical procedure used in prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections. In this, a small amount of amniotic fluid, which contains fetal tissues, is sampled from the amniotic sac surrounding a developing fetus, and then the fetal DNA is examined for genetic abnormalities.
There is a small risk that an amniocentesis could cause a miscarriage in less than 1% of pregnancy. Other potential complications include injury to the baby or mother, infection, and preterm labor, but are extremely rare.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
